Tours
Will I get seasick on a Roatán snorkel or catamaran tour?
Most people do not, because the reef sits inside a barrier that keeps the water flat and the boat rides are short: eight to twenty minutes to any of the snorkel sites we use. If you are prone to motion sickness, take the tablet an hour before boarding rather than when you feel it starting.

Seasickness is the reason a lot of cruise passengers skip the water tours, and most of the time it is a fear that does not survive contact with the actual conditions here.
Why Roatán is easier than most snorkel destinations
The island sits inside the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world. The reef breaks the swell before it reaches the shore, so the water between the beach and the reef wall behaves more like a lake than open sea. On a normal day you are looking at ripples, not waves.
The boat rides are also short. From West Bay to the snorkel sites we use, you are on the water between eight and twenty minutes depending on the tour. Seasickness needs time to build. Twenty minutes rarely gets there.
When it does happen
Three situations account for almost all of the cases we see.
The first is the catamaran, because it stays out longer. That tour runs about three hours on the water instead of twenty minutes, and if you already know you are sensitive, this is the one to think about.
The second is looking down through a mask while the boat is moving. Your inner ear says you are moving, your eyes say the water is still. That mismatch is what triggers it. Wait until the boat is anchored before putting your face in.
The third is a day with wind. Roatán gets its choppiest water between November and February when the northers come through. It is still mild by open-sea standards, but if you are sensitive, that is the season to take something in advance.
What actually works
Take the tablet before you board, not when the feeling starts. Dimenhydrinate, sold as Dramamine, needs about an hour to work. Once nausea has begun, it will not catch up. Your ship's medical centre sells it, and so does any pharmacy in Coxen Hole.
Scopolamine patches work well for people who react badly to everything else, but they need a prescription and you have to put them on the night before.
If you did not bring anything, the two things that help most on the boat are staring at the horizon and sitting low and central, where the boat moves least. Standing at the bow feels adventurous and is the worst place to be.
Eat something light beforehand. An empty stomach makes it worse, not better, and neither does a full plate of ship breakfast.
Ginger helps some people and does nothing for others. It costs nothing to try.
Tell us when you book
Write it in the booking form or send us a message. It changes what we do: we seat you where the boat is steadiest, we go slower on the transit, and the guide keeps an eye on you rather than finding out when it is already a problem.
If it turns out a boat tour is not for you, say so and we will move you to something on land. The ATV and jungle tours, the monkey and sloth park, the horseback ride along the beach, the island culture tour. Roatán has plenty that never leaves the ground, and the point is that you enjoy the day, not that you complete the tour you booked.
The short version
For a twenty minute ride to a reef inside a barrier, most people are fine without taking anything. For the catamaran, or if you already know you react to boats, take a tablet an hour before you board and sit low and central. Either way, tell us when you book.
