Getting to West Bay Beach from the cruise port

West Bay is the beach most passengers have seen in photographs before they arrive, and the reason people ask about it first.

The drive from the Port of Roatán runs about 30 minutes and crosses the hills, which is a better road than the distance suggests. The alternative is to reach West End and take the water taxi along the coast, at roughly 2 to 3 dollars a person for a 10 to 15 minute ride. Both are fine. The one that suits you depends on whether you would rather see the interior of the island or the coastline.

What makes West Bay worth the transit is the reef. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second largest reef system in the world, and at West Bay part of it sits close enough to shore that you swim out to it. No boat, no crossing, no waiting for a group to load. That is unusual, and it is the reason snorkellers rate this beach above better known Caribbean names.

The water is shallow where the reef starts, which suits people who have not snorkelled before. Our guides go in with the group rather than pointing at the water from a chair.

Two practical notes. Reef safe sunscreen matters here, because you are swimming directly over living coral. And if a beach afternoon is your whole plan, remember that the round trip spends about an hour of your port day in transit, so a five hour window leaves roughly four on the sand.
