Port day
What you can do in Roatán for free, and what free really means
If your ship docks at Isla Tropicale, the former Mahogany Bay, you can walk to the beach on a shaded trail in about ten to fifteen minutes and use a lounger without paying. At Coxen Hole there is no beach within walking distance, so free ends at the terminal gate.

Free in Roatán depends almost entirely on which pier your ship ties up to, and that is decided by your cruise line rather than by you.
Carnival renamed its Roatán destination Isla Tropicale in May 2026, so if your ticket still says Mahogany Bay it means the same place. The beach there belongs to the terminal and cruise passengers can use it. There is a chairlift that runs over to it, and that one costs money. The trail does not. It takes ten to fifteen minutes on foot, most of it shaded, and it puts you on the same sand. Loungers on that beach are reported as complimentary, though what is included tends to move around, so check at the terminal on the day rather than trusting a blog post from last season.
Coxen Hole is a different situation. The terminal sits at the edge of the island's largest town and you can walk out of the gate and into it. What you will find is a working town with shops and places to eat, not a resort strip. There is no public beach you can reach on foot. Getting to one means paying for transport, and that is where the word free stops applying.
This is the part most lists leave out. The beach itself does not charge you. Reaching it does. Travellers report paying roughly 25 to 30 dollars each way for a port taxi to West Bay, so two people who wanted a free day at the beach can spend fifty or more before they touch the water. Those are passenger reports rather than a published rate, and fares are worth agreeing before you get in the car.
What genuinely costs nothing at either port: walking around, looking at the water, and taking your photo at the painted ROATÁN letters that stand on the sand among the palms. People queue for that one, and it is the picture most of them go home with.
The honest version of the advice is this. If you want a free day, dock at Isla Tropicale and walk the trail. If you dock at Coxen Hole and you want sand, you are going to pay for the ride, and at that point comparing a taxi against a guided day makes sense, because the difference is smaller than it looks and one of the two puts you back at the ship on time.
